How tattoo removal works

Tattoos are permanent because the ink is deposited in the dermis, the inner layer of the skin. This ensures that the ink won't be absorbed into the deeper layers or washed away as the outer layer of skin naturally regenerates. When the ink is deposited, the body's immune system tries to eliminate it by sending white blood cells to absorb it. While the smaller ink particles are gradually broken down by the white blood cells, the larger particles remain and cannot be removed. As a result, the skin cells heal around these particles, making the tattoo permanent.

During your laser tattoo removal session, our advanced technician will use a laser to target the tattooed area. Unlike a laser pointer that emits a continuous light beam, tattoo removal lasers release bursts of light energy.

Each burst of energy goes through the skin and gets absorbed by the tattoo ink. The ink particles heat up, break into small pieces, and eventually get eliminated by the body's immune system over the weeks after the procedure.

What tattoo’s can be removed?

Not all tattoos can be completely removed, but modern tattoo removal lasers are quite effective. Factors like color, location, ink density, and age play a role in the success of the removal process.

Older tattoos are usually easier to remove as the ink weakens over time. Black ink is the easiest to remove due to its light absorption properties.

Skin type is also important in laser tattoo removal. Darker skin types with more melanin may have limitations on certain ink colors. Black ink is generally safe for most skin types, but extra care is needed for those with more pigment to prevent skin damage.

At B You Laser & Aesthetics, we take all these factors into account when creating your personalized treatment plan. We have a high success rate in completely removing tattoos on various skin tones, ages, and tattoo locations.

What can I expect in my laser tattoo removal session?

Prior to your first appointment, we will schedule a consultation to assess whether your tattoo is suitable for removal. During this consultation, we will have an open discussion about what you can realistically expect from the process and the potential outcomes. We will also provide you with an estimated treatment duration, the recommended time gap between sessions, and instructions for post-care of the treated area.

Additionally, we will give you a dedicated text number that you can use to reach us promptly with any questions or concerns, even during evenings, weekends, or holidays. When you arrive for your initial session, which is often scheduled on the same or next day to your consultation, we will briefly recap all the topics covered during the consultation. Most treatments are completed within minutes, ensuring a quick and efficient process. To aid in your comfort, we provide complimentary local numbing to the treated area prior to treatment.

Does laser tattoo removal hurt?

Having a tattoo removed can be quite painful, often more so than getting a tattoo in the first place. The lasers heat the ink particles to thousands of degrees to break them down, but it happens so rapidly and in a concentrated area that the energy instead collapses into a shockwave.

This shockwave vibrates through the skin and causes the upper layer of skin to lift up and appear white, or to “frost.” Though temporarily painful, this effect usually lasts just a few seconds.

There are ways to manage the pain of laser tattoo removal. At B You Laser & Aesthetics, we are proud to offer complimentary local numbing to assist in the comfort of your treatment!

As the tattoo site heals, you might experience some swelling, tenderness, and minor pain, similar to a sunburn for approximately 24/48 hours after treatment. Proper laser tattoo removal aftercare can reduce discomfort.

What happens after my tattoo removal session?

After getting your tattoo, your artist provided you with a specific set of instructions to ensure that your tattoo heals properly and looks amazing. Laser tattoo removal also requires excellent aftercare to ensure proper healing and achieve the best results. For the first 24 hours, you want to let the heat out of your skin. We recommend using Aloe Vera (if necessary), to assist in cooling your skin. You can go back to regular skin routines 24 hours post treatment.

Once your session is over, make sure to keep the tattoo site clean, moisturized, and breathable.

Are there Alternative tattoo removal methods?

There are several alternative methods to laser tattoo removal that claim to be natural and effective. However, it's important to understand the risks and limitations associated with each method:

1. Saline tattoo removal: This method involves injecting a saline solution into the dermis to dilute the ink and encourage it to fade. While it may be cheaper than laser removal, it often requires more sessions and is rarely as effective. Additionally, the repeated creation of wounds in the same area can lead to pigmentation damage and scarring.

2. Dermabrasion: This procedure involves exfoliating the skin through chemical peels or physical buffers. Although it aims to remove the tattoo, it carries a high risk of scarring, infection, and skin irregularities.

3. Tattoo removal creams: These creams are designed to gradually lighten the ink through topical application. However, many of these creams contain bleach, which can cause skin discoloration, scarring, and chemical damage to the skin.

4. Excision: This method is typically used for smaller tattoos and involves surgically removing the section of skin where the tattoo is located. While it may effectively remove the tattoo, it almost always results in scarring due to the need for stitches.

It's important to consult with a professional tattoo removal specialist before considering any alternative methods. We can provide you with accurate information about the risks and benefits of each method, helping you make an informed decision.
